Clipper Motor Yachts have long been famous for their solid, comfortable displacement cruisers but in today's time-poor world many boat buyers are looking for a vessel that can get them to their favourite spots in a short time.
The newly released Cordova 52 Series II does just that. Canadian designer Trevor Bolt has taken the classic double chine semi-displacement hull made famous by naval architect Ed Monk and given it a modern tweek.
The result is a large, comfortable motor yacht that is stable when cruising at a leisurely 10 knots but which can also kick up its heels and make an easy 20 knots plus when the speed is needed. Powered by twin Cummins 440hp turbo diesels, the Cordova gives exceptional economy at low speeds and doesn't break the bank when the throttles are pushed wide open.
The Series II Cordova 52 features a remodeled interior as well as the aforementioned extra power. There is more headroom in the two guest cabins, improved carpentry and the lounge has been remodeled to provide extra comfort.
To make life aboard not only more comfortable but safer, a moulded staircase -- with teak treads -- leads from the cockpit to the large flybridge. The days of balancing drinks or food while climbing a ladder are over.
The flybridge, where many owners and the guests will spend most of their time, has two lounges -- an L-shaped one with a fitted teak table to port and a straight three-seater to starboard. A single helm seat faces forward overlooking a wide teak dashboard equipped with engine controls and monitors, navigation electronics and an anchor controller and chain counter, while a wet bar and a barbecue are built behind the covered seating. There is room for a tender and a davit on the stern section.
The saloon, reached by double stainless steel sliding glass doors from the aft deck, features a wrap-around settee to port and two tub chairs and a teak cabinet to starboard. The lounge is covered in easy to clean ultra-leather. The teak cabinet hides a 32-inch pop-up LCD television set.
The large stainless steel framed windows give an excellent all-round view and the U-shaped galley features a four burner stove, a fridge/freezer and a microwave oven. Indeed, there is ample storage for extended cruising.
Down the three steps of the central companion way are the master stateroom, complete with ensuite, in the bow and two guest cabins -- a VIP double to starboard and a twin cabin to port. The two cabins share a second bathroom.
As with all Clipper Motor Yachts there are walk-around decks and side and aft boarding doors. The transom door open to a wide swimming platform. A deck hatch in the aft deck provides access to the large lazarette and to the forward engine room.
Standard features on the Cordova 52 Series II include a bow thruster, the flybridge hardtop and a full Raymarine electronics package. For a starting price of $1.245 million it is a lot of boat for the money.
The vessel displaces 20 tonnes and is 54 feet (16.45m) overall when the swim platform and the bow roller are included. The beam is a comfortable 16 feet (4.78m) and the maximum draft just a couple of inches over four feet (1.27m)
With 2800 litres of fuel and 1200 litres of water aboard and an 11kw Onan generator to handle all the extras, the world is your oyster.
